In 2008 two New York squash players created an initiative to increase the number of women playing the game of squash in New York city. Jessica Green and Emily Steiff, then of NY Squash, created the first “Women’s Squash Night”.
This event was so popular that it quickly spread across the United States and became known as Women’s Squash Week (WSW).
In 2013 Squash Republic partnered up NY Squash to bring the event to Canada. We helped rebrand the event and we brought it to Vancouver.
The first event in Vancouver saw seven clubs participating:
- The Bayside Club
- Bentall Athletic Centre Club
- The Bonsor Recreation Club
- Jericho Tennis Club
- Sport Central
- The River Club
These events hosted over 150 new players and were made possible by the financial support of the Vancouver Squash League.
In 2014 Barbados and Bermuda joined the initiative in 2014 which gave WSW its first international flavour. The event grew locally with clubs outside of Vancouver joining. Whistler, Evergreen in North Vancouver, and Nanaimo all hosted events in 2015. (Since that time there have been events in the UK, Ireland, India, Hong Kong, and Poland!)
In 2017 Women’s Squash Week was taken over by Squash BC.
